I started my new job as a community engagement officer for the Anne Arundel County Executive's Office on March 2, 2020. Two weeks later, I was working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, community engagement differs from what the job description stated, and most interactions take place on the phone or over the computer. Luckily, my years of experience as a digital marketer prepared me for this.
Part of my duties involves producing a weekly newsletter distributed to individuals who subscribed via the website. The newsletter was already performing great with a high open rate and a decent click rate. The previous editor's style was short, with limited images. I introduced extended teasers, more links, and more graphics. Three months later, I am happy to say the newsletter has seen an increase in click rates while sustaining our already high open rates. I've also received direct feedback from readers saying how much they enjoy the new format.
Producing an impactful newsletter requires trying new things and experimenting. If you'e looking to make improvements to your current newsletter or creating a new one, contact me today for advice.
