In August 2021, lightning struck a senior condominium community, resulting in a significant fire that damaged homes. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the incident left residents facing prolonged displacement.
Unfortunately, the event didn't meet the criteria for federal or state emergency relief. In response, my office collaborated with the Office of Emergency Management to mobilize various county agencies. We conducted a needs assessment to link affected residents with available county resources. These resources included mental health services, mobility equipment, food assistance, transportation, and general support in navigating available aid.
By leveraging this data, we facilitated crucial connections between seniors and essential resources. Additionally, this assessment allowed us to anticipate future needs and interactions, enabling us to serve our community in this time of need.
